A contemporary San Diego home asking $39.977 million is one of the city’s priciest listings, according to listing agent Craig Lotzof of Compass.
The sellers are tech entrepreneur Trevor Klein, 48, and his wife, Staci Klein.
Completed in 2020, the roughly 7,800-square-foot is located in the affluent La Jolla neighborhood with unobstructed ocean views. The house has six bedrooms plus an office. Outdoor amenities include an infinity-edge pool, a kids’ rock-climbing wall, a turf playing field and a stand-alone fitness and yoga studio.
Trevor Klein is the co-founder of the online automotive retailer AutoAnything, which was sold to AutoZone about 10 years ago for an undisclosed amount. The Kleins bought the half-acre property in the La Jolla neighborhood in 2009 for $3.9 million, and moved into the 1940s house on the lot, according to Trevor.
The Kleins had planned on remodeling the house, but were busy with work and their kids when they bought it, Trevor said. After he sold his company, he had more free time, so they decided to embark on a renovation. They quickly realized, however, that there were many limitations with the existing structure, so they decided to demolish it and build a new one.
One of the first steps of the project was leveling out part of the property so that they could build on it. The process took over a year, Trevor said, but enabled them to create a roughly 3,500-square-foot deck and a large yard along with the pool. The home’s second level also has about 1,000 square feet of outdoor decking, he said.
The property has an outdoor kitchen, dining room and fireplace. The Kleins’ children use the turf field for playing soccer, Trevor said.
He declined to disclose the building cost of the home. The couple decided to sell because they are ready for another project, said Trevor, who considers himself semiretired and invests in early stage tech startups.
According to Lotzof, the Kleins’ home is unique because it takes advantage of the entire lot, which is rare in the hilly area. If it sells at or near its asking price, it will set a record for La Jolla, Lotzof said. The priciest home sale in the area to date sold for $24.7 million in 2020.
In November, the median sale price of a home in La Jolla was just over $2 million, up 15.9% from the same time last year, according to Redfin.
