One of the nation’s biggest construction firms is teaming up with a retired chairman of the country’s largest retailer to build a medical complex for the Arizona Humane Society in Phoenix.
Ryan Cos. of is building the two-story, 72,000-square-foot campus and medical complex at 5501 E. Van Buren St., which will be called the Rob & Melani Walton Papago Park Campus. It will have acute medical and trauma care and spay/neuter services and be a base for the group’s pet adoptions and education programs, according to Ryan.
The Humane Society got a big boost last year when the Rob and Melani Walton Foundation donated $5 million to help fund the $49 million animal welfare facility. Rob Walton, who retired as chairman of Walmart’s board of directors in 2015, is a son of late Walmart founder Sam Walton.
In 2021, builder and developer Ryan signed on to help the Arizona Humane Society build the new Phoenix animal welfare campus. Ryan chooses a nonprofit project every few years as part of its Ryan Impact community service effort.
The Minneapolis-based firm is building the project slated to be finished early in the third quarter of this year at cost, saving the Humane Society more than $1 million, according to Ryan blog post.
“We look forward to completing this cutting-edge campus that will greatly benefit the animals in our community,” Chuck Carefoot, president of Ryan Cos.’ Southwest region, said in a statement.
